Hello Reader,
It's been a tough week for me, so am keeping it short by highlighting a few interesting developments.
Malaysia keeps popping up on the radar. This time, it's AirTrunk announcing a second data centre campus in Johor. At 270MW for JHB2, this adds up to a whooping 420MW footprint in Malaysia when completed. Of course, this won't happen for some time, given that JHB1 isn't fully built up yet. But if it actually develops the entire capacity, AirTrunk could well become the largest data centre operator in Malaysia.
And in case you missed it, Malaysia has announced that it will unveil stringent guidelines for the use of waters by data centres; and the new rules could kick in as soon as June 2025. The reason? Thirsty hyperscalers are requesting massive volumes of water, and the only way it will work is for data centres to seek out alternative sources of water instead of precious drinking water. This is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Elsewhere, Singtel's Nxera announced that it has secured a 5-year green loan from five banks for its upcoming DC Tuas, which has achieved the Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC) Platinum certification. It's not clear if Singtel went with the older GMDC 2019 or the just-unveiled GMDC 2024. Come March 1st, only the more stringent GMDC 2024 will be available, which is stricter.
PS: I'll be heading over to Bangkok this coming week, where I'll speak at a corporate data centre event at the Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit. If you're there and keen for a catch-up, I'm available in the afternoon on Tuesday (18 Feb).
Regards,
Paul Mah.
