GPU restrictions won't stop data centre boom in M'sia [TechStories #33]

Hello Reader,

This week saw no small amount of trepidation over new GPU restrictions unveiled by the U.S. White House. I received several emails and messages about it; many expressed concerns that it would arrest Malaysia's data centre growth.

I personally don't think it will stop Malaysia's data centre boom for the simple reason that there's a lot more than AI going on. Moreover, I see the latest regulations as a simple tightening of laws to ensure U.S. supremacy in AI. I explain more in "Why new GPU restrictions won't kill Malaysia's data centre boom" below.

And in case you missed it, Stack announced its entry into Malaysia with a 220MW campus. But while its double-digit capacity is par for the course these days, hidden in the announcement is a seemingly minor but noteworthy fact: At least one of the two data centres mentioned will be a two-story facility and the campus will have a "multi-level" electrical yard.

The reason lies with the smaller plot of land that Stack was able to secure - the campus is far smaller than NTT's 290MW Johor campus announced just a few months ago. Are we reaching a tipping point in terms of data centre land cost in Malaysia?

Finally, if you hail from the financial services sector, check out Money20/20's "The future of fintech in APAC" white paper below. It's free and I played a role in writing it up from research conducted by the team.

Regards,
Paul Mah.
