How to gain an unfair advantage [TechStories #38]

Hello Reader,

Earlier this week, I spoke in Bangkok at a private gathering of just over 100 professionals from the data centre ecosystem.

My topic? How to gain an unfair advantage over their peers.

Read beyond the headlines

When I was invited and given the first slot of the day, I thought long and hard about what to share. I finally drew inspiration from a comment last year by a technical director who told me he liked my writing.

"What do you like about it," I've asked over the informal coffee chat then.

It was an authentic question, given that he is a senior executive with decades of experience and hundreds of data centre professionals under him. I couldn't see how I could have offered any insights that he didn't already know.

He paused for a moment. “You make people think,” he said.

So, I decided to teach attendees some techniques to read beyond news headlines and draw their own conclusions, whether from recent data centre outages, the likely trajectory of AI data centres, or what the upcoming DC-CFA 2 in Singapore will likely entail.

It was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But what gratified me the most was when an attendee came up over the break to explain why he'd kept quiet during the brief call for questions. Almost apologetically, he said: "You really had me thinking about what you shared."

Asus GPU server

There's been a lot of talk about liquid cooling. In my mind, there is no question that it represents the future of AI data centres. The only problem? Most data centres today only offer air-cooling - and many will remain stuck with it for the foreseeable future.

With that in mind, I explored the practical considerations for deploying an air-cooled GPU server. On this front, I also had the opportunity to get up close with one of Asus’ latest GPU servers, complete with 8x Nvidia H200 GPUs.

Unfortunately, nobody's lending me a US$300,000 server, no matter how nicely I ask. I did ask a load of questions and took many photos though. Check it out in Under the hood: The hardware behind Asus' H200 GPU server below.

How did your week go?

Regards,
Paul Mah.
